The book that Dusty Shelf hands to you refering to it as the "Giak Tutorial" is rather plain. The sweat-stained, leather cover has odd, blue lettering that looks like it was written with a very crude hand--one might even say a fist. No effort has been made to adorn it. You guess from the sweat-stains that many have used this book.
Dusty Shelf has already gone back to his work. Looking sidelong over his shoulder at your puzzled look, he says, "The Tutorial is designed to teach the Desert dialect of the Giak Language. This Tutorial is the result of my work and that of other scholars.
"Desert Giak began as the language of dialogue between amoral merchants along this caravan route and the agents of the Dark Ones with whom they dealt. It combines the vocabulary of Darkland Giak with a grammar more similar to that of the languages of northeastern Magnamund like Sommlending and Vassagonian. It has become the language of choice among the criminal element of Vassagonia and Casiorn--rather like the thieves' cant found in the Stornlands. It's required reading for the Kai that come to this Oasis."
Desert Giak is an attempt to standardize what we call Darkland Giak and to resolve some problems with it. The resulting dialect is less ambiguous and more readable. It was sometimes necessary in standardizing Darkland Giak to add to the language. This was done as little as possible. In the cases where it was necessary, we mostly transferred English constructs to Giak.
I apologize for the long wait. Sometimes the world of school intrudes upon the Oasis. Lesson VII is finally here.
Note:For those of you who have completed Lesson II previous to 1 January 1998, Desert Giak has changed in the way that one asks questions without an interrogatory word. See the pertinent section of Lesson II for details.
